Life in the UK Test, Knowledge of Language And Life in The UK Requirement

Life in the UK Test, Knowledge of Language And Life in The UK Requirement

Life in the UK Test for Indefinite Leave To Remain (Settlement in the UK) or British Citizenship.

You are required to demonstrate the Knowledge of English Language and Life in the UK before you can apply for Settlement in the UK or British Citizenship subject to certain exceptions.

You do not have to take Life in the UK Test if you are applying for Indefinite Leave To Remain in the UK under HSMP Judicial Review policy. This means that if your initial HSMP application was submitted before 03/04/2006, you will be eligible to apply for Settlement in the UK after 4 years stay in the UK and you are not required to take Life in the UK test before ILR application.

Life in the UK Test Requirement For Indefinite Leave To Remain

If you are going to qualify for Indefinite Leave To Remain in the UK soon, you will first need to take Life in the UK test and successfully pass it. You will need to include Life in the UK test pass letter with your ILR UK application.

What is Life in the UK Test?

Life in the UK Test is designed to test your knowledge of English language and Life in the UK in general. Initially Life in the UK test was made compulsory for those who wanted to apply for Naturalization or Citizenship in the UK but later it was made compulsory for even those who wanted to apply for Indefinite Leave To Remain in the UK or UK Residency.

If you speak English to a reasonable standard, you will need to pass the Life in the UK test.

Knowledge of language and life in the United Kingdom

You need to demonstrate the knowledge of language and life in the United Kingdom that you normally need to have before you make an application for indefinite leave to remain or settlement (also known as permanent residence, UK residency or ILR).

You can demonstrate your knowledge of language and of life in the United Kingdom (KOL) in two ways:

  1. If you speak English to a reasonable standard, you will need to pass the Life in the UK test.
  2. If you are not an English speaker, you will need to take and pass an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course which contains citizenship materials. To check your language ability, you should work through the tutorial on the Life in the UK test website. If you cannot fully understand the information in this tutorial, you may need to take a course in English and citizenship

There are certain categories of people who are exempt from taking Life in the UK test.

If you are aged over 65 or under the age of 16 you do not need to take Life in the UK test before applying for ILR or UK Residency and British Citizenship. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from learning the language you may be able to claim exemption from taking the Life in the UK Test.
